Local drains
Gold rush cottages
Fremantle was settled in 1829 and declared a city in 1929. Gold rush money in the 1890s paid for hundreds of buildings, and the West End is still known for its late Victorian and Edwardian streets. REIWA describes the 1890s worker's cottage as a typical Fremantle home, and an 1896 limestone and tin cottage still stands on South Terrace.
Homes that old have had more than a century of extensions, new bathrooms and changed pipe runs, so a single drain can join pipe from several eras. Old joints are where roots and cracks usually start.
Our job notes from August 2024 to September 2026 cover 89 Fremantle jobs. Nearly half mention relining, and more than a third mention the sewer line. About one in ten mention roots.
In January 2026 we cleared a main line blockage at the base of a Fremantle soil stack. The camera then showed a section of clay pipe knocked completely out of line about seven metres downstream, under a large tree, so we recommended robotic cutting and relining as the permanent fix.
