Brick bungalows from the 1920s
Dalkeith was subdivided in 1911 and grew with the Perth-wide building boom of the 1920s. A Road Board by-law required houses to be built of brick, and styles ran from Federation to the Californian bungalow. A State Government foreshore study describes Nedlands and Dalkeith as suburbs of large blocks where most homes are single-storey bungalows.
Large blocks mean long drain runs from the house to the sewer connection. Water Corporation says suburbs more than 20 years old are less likely to have PVC wastewater pipes, and that a root needs only a hairline fracture. On a long, old line, there's a lot of pipe for a root to find.
