Railway estate to brick homes
Bayswater grew around the railway. The Fremantle to Guildford line opened in 1881, the Bayswater Estate was advertised in five-acre lots in July 1885, and the station was built in 1896. The first homes were owner-built from corrugated iron and weatherboard. After 1904, most new buildings were brick and weatherboard, built to last.
Building picked up quickly again after the Second World War, and subdividing older lots is common today. A single Bayswater block can carry sewer pipe laid in very different decades.
Our job notes from August 2024 to September 2026 cover 83 Bayswater jobs. More than a third mention the sewer line and three in ten mention relining. More than one in five mention roots, and more than one in ten a collapsed or broken pipe.
In September 2026 a Bayswater toilet was flushing slowly and the laundry sink gurgled whenever the shower ran. The camera traced it to roots in the main line about 28 metres from the toilet's inspection opening, around half a metre down. We jetted them out and confirmed the line was running clear.
