How did roots get in my pipe?

Tree roots enter drains through small cracks and loose joints, seeking moisture. A pipe carrying wastewater is a permanent water source, so once a root finds a gap, it grows toward it rather than away.

The problem

A thin filament becomes a full blockage

A single root through a hairline crack starts as a thin filament. Left alone, it thickens, catches paper and grease, and narrows the pipe until water barely moves through. What began as a slow drain becomes a full blockage, usually at the worst possible time.

The signs

How to tell it is roots

If more than one of these applies, the cause is worth confirming with a camera inspection rather than jetting again and hoping.

  • Drains that empty slower and slower over weeks, rather than blocking suddenly
  • Gurgling from a drain when another fixture is used nearby
  • The same drain blocking repeatedly, even after jetting
  • A camera inspection showing root filaments or a root mass inside the pipe
  • Damp or unusually green patches of lawn tracking the line of a buried pipe

How we get the roots out

Skipping the third step is why root blockages come back. The root mass is gone, but the crack is still there, and roots follow moisture back to the same weak point sooner or later.

    Camera inspection

We run a CCTV drain camera through the pipe to find where the roots entered and how much of the pipe they have filled.

    Removal

For a lighter root mass, we clear it with hydro jetting: high-pressure water breaks the roots up and flushes them out. For a dense or woody root mass that jetting can't shift, we use the IMS Robotic Cutter, a diamond-tipped cutting head that physically cuts through the roots under camera guidance.

    Permanent repair

Clearing the roots restores flow, but the crack or joint they entered through is still open. We reline the pipe to seal that entry point, so roots can't grow back into the same spot.

Proof on camera

See the blockage.

We run a camera before and after every clear, so you see what was in the pipe and that it's running again.

Why Plumbed Right

Why choose
Plumbed Right

Standard hydro jetting handles most root blockages. For the ones it can't, Plumbed Right has the equipment to cut through them instead of digging the pipe up.

  1. The IMS Robotic Cutter

For thick, woody roots packed into a joint, Plumbed Right runs an IMS Robotic Cutter to cut through them instead of digging the pipe up.

  2. Since 2005

  3. One team, the full sequence

Our own team handles the camera inspection, the root removal and the reline.

    Questions

    Tree root
    questions

Still unsure? Call and talk to our team, not a call centre.

    The problem

How do tree roots get inside a pipe?

Roots enter through small cracks, loose joints, or old pipe seals, drawn by the moisture inside a wastewater pipe. Once a root finds a gap, it thickens and eventually blocks the flow.

How do I know if roots are causing my blockages?

Slow-draining fixtures that worsen over weeks, gurgling drains, and repeat blockages after jetting are common signs. A CCTV camera inspection confirms it by showing the roots directly.

    Clearing the roots

Can you remove roots without digging up my garden?

Yes. We clear roots with hydro jetting or the IMS Robotic Cutter, both fed in through existing access points. Digging is only needed if the pipe itself has collapsed.

What is the difference between jetting and the IMS Robotic Cutter for root removal?

Jetting uses high-pressure water and works well on lighter root growth. The IMS Robotic Cutter physically cuts through dense, woody root masses that water pressure alone can't clear.

    Keeping them out

Will the roots come back after you clear them?

They can, if the crack or joint they entered through isn't sealed. That's why we recommend relining the pipe after clearing the roots. It seals the entry point, and relining carries a 25-year warranty.

Do you offer a permanent fix for tree root blockages?

Clearing the roots and relining the damaged section seals the crack they entered through, which stops roots re-entering the same spot. Relining carries a 25-year warranty.
